Tomales Point Hike
There's quite a backlog of hikes that I've been meaning to record here, more for my own memory than any other purpose. This 9.5-mile jaunt was made back in April 2016 (the 3rd, to be exact) when I lucked into a car rental for work and had a spare day to make use of it. Of course, driving to Marin was my first (and only) choice for car utilization. Having just won the lottery to get a permit to hike Mt. Whitney, which is 11-miles each direction, I wanted to hike a longer trail to get a sense of distance.
Though this trail has 1,300' in elevation change, it felt mainly flat and was quite easy. Since I was alone, I kept a brisk pace through the fog and then the emerging sun and finished in about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Out and back trails are never my favorite, but the views on this one were enough to make it palatable.
The drive to the trailhead was beautiful in its own right. Misty cows! I started the hike in fairly thick fog and mist, though it added to the striking landscape, in my opinion. The wildflowers were in bloom, adding a layer of purples and yellows to the rolling hills of green. And Tule Elk also dotted the pastures.
By the time I was approaching the tip of the peninsula, the sun was breaking through the clouds, and I got to enjoy the return trip in full sunshine. Such a difference it makes in how the environment feels!
